My Knighthood Quest

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Knighthood Quest

It is funny how time changes our desires and plans. Back when Buzz Vickery was doing his Knighthood of Sufferlanderia I said I'd never do that. Well no I'm eating my words. I have been planning to do a Quest or Knighthood attempt on January 17th at my LBS. 10 Sufferfest videos back to back in public to raise money for my Tour de Cure effort. (link below) I'll be joined by some friends for some of the videos, likely not the first. The last one will be a much larger group and timed for closing time of the shop. At this point I'm considering making a last minute change to my line-up as my final three currently are Wretched, Revolver and then Violator. I'll try to post an update sometime during the Quest. I will be posting updates on Facebook throughout and it will be uploaded to Strava.

You have been a member here since 2009 and with a post count of 9241 you do not know what Sufferfest is seems unlikely. If I'm wrong about that point let me know and I'll explain it as well. Knighthood of Sufferlandria is achieved when a person does 10 Sufferfest videos back to back with a few rules, the ten have to be on the allowed list, you must own all ten or subscribe to a streaming service that hosts them or do it at an approved facility, no more than 10 minutes off between each, and they must be 10 different ones. Doing the event to raise money for a charity is advised and the event must be documented. Then you must ride hard enough and suffer to feel that you are worthy of Knighthood. Currently in the USA there are less than 100 people that have done this.

I am doing this on January 17th.

Wretched, Revolver and Violator are three Sufferfest videos and are currently my final three.

Sorry for assuming that folks that read the 41 were up to speed on The Sufferfest.

Oh yeah if you click on my Tour de Cure signature badge you get directed to a page where you can donate to help my charity.

Ditto (with the exception of the Rubber Glove video, which I saw and used once because it is available for Strava premium users.)

10 videos back to back is nuts. They are like ~1 hour each, average. I don't see anyone giving true 100% effort for more than 2 or 3 in a row. By #10 people will most likely be lazily spinning at 50% FTP and ignoring instructions.

How exactly is this supposed to be done - are you going to install a battery of trainers in a back room of the LBS in front of the TV, and start in the morning so you can fit all ten videos during the open hours?

@hamster I'll be starting about 8 AM local time. The trainer, well actually probably three will be set up near the entrance of the shop with my laptop table in front of the middle one which is where I'll watch the videos. If friends join me we'll move it forward so all three can see. I'll be timing it so that we can start the final one at 5:35 so as to setup like we do for spin classes.

Most Knights start at 75% effort and adjust if needed. However when the RPE is 10 well you go as hard as you can. Ending with Violator, which is 64 sprints in an hour has me somewhat concerned. FWIW I have done double centuries. I can and have gone all day on a bike. Leading up to this I have specifically trained for it. I have done 5 back to back at 70% and felt fine after.

Yeah, I live in a place where it's not necessary to own a trainer to ride all year long, so I've never heard of any of this either.

For clarification, am I to understand that you plan to ride a trainer upwards of 10-15 hours in a row? In public? Do you have any sort of general stats with regard to the total miles/time you're anticipating?

Regardless of the details, it sounds rather Herculean. Good luck!

Thanks. Heard of Sufferfest obliquely, but never investigated what it means. Never heard of Sufferlandia. Ask anyone. I post my own thoughts a lot more than I read other folks'.

Good for you. Certainly better you than me.

Thanks for asking! It seems likely that since I also spend lots of time on Facebook and that Buzz Vickery has local connections many may still not have knowledge of the Knighthood. I think it is probably a fair guess that where you live trainer workouts don't get much press. FWIW we have among us a Knight in the Clydesdale forum, I don't know if he spends any time here in the 41......

The 41 is the Road bike forum. At one time it was part of the URL. Each sub forum was given a number.

I have no idea who Buzz Vickery is either.

And, I don't know about the others, but trainer workouts aren't particularly popular where I live now, or where I've lived over the past 6 years. Why kill yourself on a trainer when you can cycle outside most of the time.

But most gyms have spinning classes ...great for dark evenings and rainy days.

I just skimmed the first post really quickly the first time and my initial thought was that it was about Buzz Aldrin being knighted. I had to read it again.

Good luck, Mark! I know what you're talking about only because you've mentioned it on the C&A forum and I looked at the Sufferfest website. If that's what you're into, it seems like a good quest.
