What is Strava saying to me?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is Strava saying to me?

I noticed Strava talking to me a few months ago. I usually have my ringer off and the phone stowed in my seatpack or jersey pocket, so I've not been concerned about it or able to hear it clearly.

It seems to be calling out segment completion times, is that right? Just the time, and nothing about rank or PR?

I was considering running an earbud to hear, but if it doesn't indicate the segment start, I'm not sure it's useful for me.

If the phone were visible, are there visual prompts to indicate segment starts? Does the screen need to be on, or does it push alerts?

It's highly unlikely I'll involve my phone any more deeply in my rides, but I'm curious how this functionality works and whether it might be fun or useful.

Do you use it yourself? What do you think?

Any insights are appreciated.

There is a setting to toggle this feature. If you star "highlight" a segment, it will tell you when you started and your current best time. Halfway through the segment it will tell you your time compared to your best (10 seconds behind/ahead).

I see that toggle; only one starred segment, though and I hear it on other segments too.

It will tell you every time you finish a segment, and the time in which you completed it.

I did laps with it on one time (after which the novelty faded), and it told me start, stop, and halfway ("segment Crossings Loop started"/"half-way, time: 5 minutes 9 seconds").

Ok, thanks! If it tells start, that may be kinda useful....maybe equally annoying. I've heard it jabbering away trying to keep up on overlapping segments. I'll probably try it.

I believe it can be set to (defaults to?) 'starred' segments only to minimize the chatter.
