Why is CAMPAGNOLO so expensive ?

Because pricing is art + science....the price is what the intended market will bear. If not, they're either leaving money (your's) on the table or not maximizing sales. Plus, it sounds eye-talian.

Campagnolo Centaur Groupset | Merlin Cycles

$589 CDN, Veloce is a currently $453 CDN, so less than the price of a new 5800 groupset. Just gets crazy expensive as you go up... oh and did anyone already say because it's Italian?

They have two factories. One in Italy, one in Romania.

They are also a relatively small operation. Almost like a "boutique" brand.

Not saying whether the value is good or bad, that's up to you to decide.

It's not more expensive unless you decide to put your LBS owner's children through college by paying US retail price. There's a Campagnolo group at almost every Shimano (or SRAM) price point as long as you prudently shop around.

For example:
Shimano Ultegra 6800 - $607 from Ribble, 2274 grams
Campagnolo Athena Carbon - $629 from Ribble, 2400 grams

Shimano Dura Ace 9000- $1245 from Ribble, 2016 grams
Campagnolo Chorus - $1065 from ribble, 1870 grams

Campagnolo being better is subjective. Is it better to get to the next gear with a pair of thumb button shoves PUSH - release - left button push - release or two inner levers PUSH - release - push one lever - release - push - release - push - release - push - release? Is it better to hit a hood mounted brake release when you bend a rim or break a spoke and keep riding with full brakes, or open the lever at the brake perhaps loosing braking on that end?

I'd also ask if it's better to have a crank which does not look like a dead octopus, although Campagnolo has since jumped on that band wagon.

It's expensive because it can be and people will still buy it.

also on that comparison, uh yeah, no. Compare shimano's top model with campy's top model and get back to us. Like DA vs SR...

It's the best looking groupset you can put on a bike, that's for sure, and that it's a heritage Italian brand...well that's why it's expensive.

Japan is very good (arguably better), but no panache. Styling is often frankly vulgar, never supreme.

Because it's the best.

Personally, I think it's due to bone-headed business decisions... that said, I prefer their products for the most part.

Because there are mugs who think it is worth it.

Because SRAM is going out of business.

I'd want to look at detailed weight breakdown, particularly in case of DA9000 vs Chorus. I compared weights of shifters, FD, RD, and a compact crankset, as published by Competitive Cyclist, and in each case the DA9000 part was lighter. DA9000 was ahead by 76 g just across these parts. To have it behind by 146 g overall, either something must be very rotten somewhere else, or it is not an apples to apples comparison.

Also, the expensiveness of Campagnolo is much more pronounced in the electronic scene. Last I checked, Record EPS and Super Record EPS were both heavier and more expensive than DA9070.

Status/eliteness. If you're willing to pay for that...... My grandparents were from It-lee, but I'm content with my humble Dura Ah-chee.See? it's Eye-talian, too! (Like my grandmother said of the actor Ralph Bellamy: "He must be Italian! 'Bella-me' !'. :D)
