Force 22 on rs80s
I'll be buying 11 speed wheels eventually but I read an article that I'd like to run by you guys. The article said that you can take a 1170 cassette and remove the 11T cog, making it sized correctly for 10 speed freehubs with the spacer and then correct the lower limit screw to knock off the last gear. My thinking is that if it were that easy more people would utilize their old wheel sets and this topic would be well covered...
Has anyone else heard anything about this? I was going to jump on Vuelta rims but I really don't want to go any thinner than my rs80s so it's still up for debate. This lead to more searching and finding this information. I will never use the 11T so it could hold me over until they offer a 12-28 in anything but Dura-ace. |
Subscribed. I want to know the answer on this one too. I *faintly* recall reading somewhere that the "remove the 11th cog" wouldn't work on RS80s or DA C24s, due to something specific with the hub. Could be mistaken, though

This link has the various dimensions for spacers and gears.
Bicycles/Maintenance and Repair/Gear-changing Dimensions - Wikibooks, open books for an open world All gears are 1.6mm thick 9/10/11-speed, only the spacer changes. This is why chainrings are cross-compatible. Shimano/SRAM 10-speed used 2.35mm spacers. Shimano/SRAM 11-speed uses 2.14mm spacers. The stack for a Shimano 11-speed is 39.0mm vs 37.2mm for 10-speed. Removing 1 cog gets you to 37.4mm, so it should work on most wheels. Most likely you'll need to move the last spacer to the inside of the cassette so that you end with a cog, rather than a spacer. For shimano cassettes the 11t cog is special and designed interface with the lockring. On a Shimano cassette you need to retain the smallest cog, meaning you need to lose one somewhere else. |
In the article they were taking the 16T out, for me that's a usable gear and I'd rather lose the 11T if possible. It sounds like it's definitely worth testing out being winter and if it doesn't work I won't be out riding time while I wait to choose a wheelset. Thanks for the input.

I think a member (or two) here is using a 5800 or 6800 cassette without the second gear. Something like: lockring, 11, 13-25 (or -28). It seems to come up once in awhile when someone isn't sure about upgrading to 11 because they lack funds to replace the rear hub/wheel.
I don't know about SRAM. I don't know is there is anything special about RS80s or DA 24's. |
I think it's worth experimenting with and seeing if I can't make it work temporarily.
