Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Visor?

Is a visor on a road bike any use? Or is it just annoying?

The hardcore roadies will tell you that visors are for MTBer's. Something about a visor blocking your view or causing neck aches. I've ridden with a cycling cap (bill forward) under my helmet without any problems.

Buy a helmet with a detcheable visor. That way if you don't like it you can take it off and if you do, you got one.

When it's really pssing down rain and the "hardcore roadies" are sitting on their butts at home dreaming about the Tour a visor will keep the water from running down the inside of your glasses

My helmet has a detachable visor. I just carry it in my camelbak(oh no! another roadie fashion faux pas) and if I need it I clip it on.

Sometimes I find it annoying but other times I love it.(i.e when it's raining or when it's extremely sunny)

I started riding with one and found that blocking the bright sky is a great plus. The human eye can handle a broad range of light to dark detail. However, where there are areas that are too bright; the contrast and ability to keep detail sharp is deminished. By blocking the broad, bright sky (or even clouds) you lower the contrast range that your eye (or eyes, if you have more than one) has to deal with.

A cycling cap can do the same thing; but I like the air flowing over what's left of my hair through the helmet
