Base Building Over Summer And Racing In Winter
I'm thinking about trying something a little different for this years training.
I come from a triathlon background and usually build long slow miles over the winter and then race over summer. However, I'm quitting triathlon to focus purely on road cycling events for various reasons.
I'm looking to structure my training with doing fortnightly club races which range from 40-60km over the winter months and then have a 2-3 month spring build and peak for a racing sportive/gran forno. My "off season" would be early summer after the sportive which works well with work as I'm usually busier that time of year and don't have as much spare time to train during the week.
Over the later summer months in I will be able to get in larger volume since the weather is better suited for it and do the odd sportive event as training and then over the winter when I'm doing shorter events, I can focus on speed and intervals on the wind trainer when the weather isn't so conductive to doing large volume outdoors.
Reasons for doing this is that I like to be able to go on long training rides in summer when the weather is good, I don't like doing 2+hr indoor trainer rides base building in winter and I like the idea of doing club racing as something to focus on in winter when my motivation naturally drops.
Does anyone do something similar?
What are your thoughts on this plan?
