New Bike: Trek Domane 6 series or 2014 5.9

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Bike: Trek Domane 6 series or 2014 5.9

Looking at Trek Domanes. I am looking very hard at the 6 series with Dura Ace. However, the shop has a 2014 5.9 Dura Ace in my size. The 6 will be around $7,300.

The 5.9 will be around $3,500. I am upgrading the wheels, stem, and bar with the final price being around $5,750 for the 5.9 with two sets of wheels Bontrager Race Lite with 28 tires and Bontrager Race XLite with 25 tires. The bar is upgraded to carbon Race XLite IsoZone. Stem to new carbon stem.

My question is is there a $1,500 difference in the frames? Is the 6 that much better. The LBS said there is no perceived difference to mere mortals. The difference is in the fitting of the tubes Stepped butting for the 6 series and overlay for the 5 series.

Thanks!

I don't know about the frame differences but that's a great price on the 5.9.

I work in a Trek LBS and I will agree with your LBS. Unless you just really, really have to have the 6-series, take the deal on the 5.9. The 5-series bikes are an excellent value, and especially on the Domanes-- where they have the IsoZone break in the frame--the difference between the two construction methods and carbon fiber used will be negligible.

Does the shop have a 6-series on hand so you can test ride them back to back?

I'd keep the $1500 in my pocket. I have a 5.9 DA bike and put a lot of time and miles in a 6.2 demo (we didn't have a 6.9) and I didn't notice any difference on the roads I'd be riding. Is the bike lighter and a little stiffer? Sure. Is it dramatically different to warrant $1500? Absolutely not... at least not in my opinion.

That being said, I also didn't notice a whole lot of difference between the Race Lite and Race XLite wheels, either. But I've only logged maybe 300-350 miles on the XLites before I had to give them back.

I think a 5.9 with a full carbon cockpit and two sets of wheels for sub 6k is a much better buy, compared to that 6-series @ $7300.

Go with the 5.9. It's a much better value and the difference would be negligible. I would only go for a 6 if I was specifically looking at p1.

Thanks for the replies. I put a deposit down on the 5.9. Now if we can only get rid of all this snow.

I'd ride an Emonda in at least a 500-series (SL) frame, as I think it's a better bike than the Domane in every way - but specifically in not feeling completely dead like the Domane.
