I build my own. So I guess you could say I do my own work.

Every PHD I've ever worked with is completely dangerous around tools of any kind!
The only thing I've ever had a bike shop do is install a cartridge BB in an old Schwinn. That's because it involved taping new threads in the frame and I couldn't buy the tap for what he charged to install it.

I have a background in automotive repair. I do almost all my own work, and repairs for my friends that ride with me on a regular basis. The only thing I did not do was build/repair wheels. I picked up an older Park TS-2, so I'm now truing wheels & looking into dish gauge & spoke tension gauge so I can try my hand at building some wheels in the future.

After completed a 4 week bike mechanic class I'm better prepared to tackle most jobs. Plus I got feedback sport bike stand, park tool home kit, and got the big blue park tool book. Which I recommend to any beginner or pro mechanic as it's good reference. Park Tool Co. » Park Tool Co.

I normally do everything except install BBs and headsets. Not worth it to me to buy special tools for the few times I need that done, plus BB installs keep changing. My work has been much more reliable than any LBS I've used. One does need a stand and somewhere to work.

While I have done my own stuff in the past, when I was racing we had mechanics. They were professionals that could do the work correctly much faster than I could. These days I am fortunate to have a close friend who used to wrench for a couple of teams, so he does the work and I slide him a few bucks. I just do not have the time, he does this all the time and I'd rather be riding a bike than fixing one.
He's the da Vinci of wrapping bar tape. He gets it exactly the way I want it.
We see some pretty interesting home repairs. But we will teach any customer how to fix their own bike, from a to z.

I do all my own work exclusively... but then I'm a LBS mechanic as well.
