Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultegra v.s. Shimano "High Grade" components

What's the difference between Ultegra components and Shimano "High Grade" components? My bike has All Ultegra except for the brakes, which are "High Grade" Long Reach Dual Pivot Brakes. I see a lot of bikes with these brakes mixed in with Ultegra components. The Shimano website gives little explanation of the differences between the "High Grade" components and the named component groups. Please enlighten me.

Maybe the "High Grade" label is just a marketing slogan. Like Lucky Charms, they're Magically Delicious!

Never heard of High Grade. I have heard someone tell me that they had a Shimano High Grade chain. I told them i had never heard of it, and they showed me the HG on the chain. I told them it was for HyperGlide, and I'm *pretty* sure i'm right.

I'm not hallucinating. The Shimano website lists a whole group of "High Grade" components which have only "Shimano" on them. My Trek Pilot 5.2 has all Ultegra except for these brakes.

The only higher grade I know of is Dura Ace and the difference between the two is very small.

Wow! And among those "high grade" components is a set of 8-speed STI levers - maybe a good choice for people who get annoyed with Sora's botton shifter - if only there was a retail source for tehm!

That is cool they make those, but I'll bet you they don't come cheap.

It's too bad, because 8 speed stuff is cheap to maintain. Get some Sora steel 53/39 8s chainrings and the drivetrain will probably never wear out.

Sora will go 9s soon anyway.

I saw those R-600 STI levers on a bike recently. They have shims to allow for reach adjustment. Very nice for people with smaller hands.

They are about $200 a pair for the 8 speed STI brake/shifters.

Those ST-R600 levers are very popular on WSD-type bikes. A friend of mine has them on her Specialized Dolce Elite. It seems that the "High Grade" component series are Shimano's special application versions of their normal components. The model numbers sort of betray what group they're intended for although in the grand scheme of things a Shimano group is really just a marketting packaging. The real trim-levels can best be distinguished by the model numbers.

These BR-R600 long reach "high grade components" caliper brakes are Ultegra-quality parts. They came standard on my '05 Trek Pilot 5.2.

I have another bike with Ultegra brakes (BR-6600), and they seem of comparable quality.

See Sheldon Brown's site at https://sheldonbrown.com/harris/brakes.html#brakesets for details.

High-Grade means a non-groupset component. The long-reach calipers are not part of the Ultegra groupset although they are built to Ultegra standards.
