Brake upgrade?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brake upgrade?

My new Felt F70 and my old Giant OCR 3 both came with the budget Tektro brakes. When I first got my OCR, I noticed that the braking power was next to nothing; especially compared to the brakes on my mountain bike. Also, the brakes don't seem to stay centered very well, and the pads often rub on the rim when I am riding. This happened on both bikes. My question is: Will I notice a significant difference with a better brakeset, like Shimano 105 or Ultegra, or is it best to just save my money because all road brakes are like this and there really isn't any difference between them?

My R700 came with generic Cannondale brakes that I have no reference to compare to. They seen to work great. Not as quick as my disc brakes on my MTB but never felt that I needed stronger brakes.

I guess my question is, how much of a difference do different brakes make? I never really paid any attention to them because they worked fine. I've only had my brakes rub on my rim once.

No, your tektros are fine. V-brakes are inherenly stronger than road bike sidepulls.

I guess if your tektros aren't dual pivot, you could upgrade to those although I really wouldn't bother.

I've thought about doing this myself, and was actually searching around for information on this today. I have a Trek 1500, and most of what I found pointed to the breaks being the weakest component on the bike and recommended an upgrade. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any specifics for upgrading. Right now my brakes tend to lose adjustment easily and I often think I should be able to stop faster, but have no other frame of reference for comparison. I wish I could offer some help, but I too am interested in the answer to this.

I've recently done a brake upgrade. I have a 04 Cannondale R1000 that came stock with the Cannondale Omega dual pivot brakes. I never felt quite happy about the feel of them and sure enough while out riding last week, I crashed. The brakes just weren't biting enough to stop my momentum. I went down on my right side and cracked the rear derailer, chewed up my seat, broke my right shoe buckle and shredded my right pedal. Not to mention the numerous injuries to my butt, back and elbow.

Anywho, I saved the frame and got it over to the LBS and they got it fixed up. I then had them replace the Omegas with Ultegra brakes. I'm much happier with them and there is a definite increase in braking power.

If you have the cash, an upgrade might be the ticket. You could also try something like these: https://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?p...ajor=1&minor=8
