I usually go for Skittles at a gas station. Pretty high calories : price ratio and I'm not a fan of candy bars.

Granola bar (preferably Clif or Kind), peanuts, banana, Baby Ruth bar, occasionally a Slim Jim, but always and most importantly some kind of nutrient-enriched beverage are the things I've gotten from convenience stores to tide myself over. Aside from sausage biscuits, I just can't bring myself to eat a gas station sandwich; if a meal is in order, I'll typically find a place where I can sit down for something, in which case the credit card is likely to come out (typically carry between $5 and $25 with ID and such).

On the second day of a 193 mile two-day trip, I was saved from obliteration by two gas station 7" diameter M&M cookies.

Ok, this is just pain unjustified cruelty. damn they all look good.
one comment on the original OP's question - who has such a soft schedule that they on a whim can suddenly "BIKE THE WHOLE DAY"? geez! that is my dream life right there.
BTW, I always carry a $20, and my go to is a snickers bar. although a "Royale with cheese" is awesome on long ride and pretty cheap.

It's been a few years since I've been in Texas. But I don't think any state (even New York) has a tax on groceries. Cigarettes, beer, candy, soft drinks, and restaurant [eat-in] foods... sure. But I am pretty confident the Banana should have been non-taxable.
But... on second thought... I take back those eight asterisks I called the person at the gas station.

Rules... that carry legal implications are called "laws". Complicated laws... are called something that would put this normal, friendly, post into the PO section. I was merely trying to be humorous with my asterisks (there was never a word blockage).
