Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Has anyone tried Aero Tech Design shorts?

My fiancee got me a few of their jerseys (one of the few who sell "tall" sizes) and I like them but I'm hesitant to try a new brand for shorts. Has anyone tried these? How do they compare to other shorts in the price range?

I have a black pair. I can't remember the model, they may be the "top shelf". They have worked well, and are well made.

I have a pair of Top Shelf and a pair of Black Pearl. They are both very good quality and comfortable for either fast group rides or centuries. I got the Black Pearl because they have a short inseam and make great liner shorts under trekking or jean shorts for recreational rides.

You've been able to buy them in several brands in any men's clothing department in the country during the spring and summer months for as long as I can remember. I don't recall them ever being "a thing" just a comfortable alternative to regular jeans during warm weather. About as basic summer wear as a t-shirt.

Sure, I remember those days too - but it's been quite some time since they were even remotely 'in'. Time to move those to yard work duty (or Goodwill).

Aero Tech has a very good reputation in the C/A forum. One of the few companies that makes the larger sizes, quality products and excellent customer service....from what I hear.

The key to jorts is to get the really tight ones to show off your nice butt. You'll need a nice butt, too, but seeing as we're all cyclists, you should have that. If you see a chick checking you out, it helps to tell her, "I know what you're thinking, and you should know, I don't mind if you sexually assault me."

I've got some of the Top Shelf bib shorts, and they're more like bottom shelf. I don't really wear them anymore. The pad is mediocre and the material isn't particularly breathable. I've got Descente and Assos bib shorts and both are significantly better. I'm not sure you can do better than Aerotech at that price, there's much better shorts out there, but those are usually $100+ (sale price).

If you're serious about cycling save your money and get better shorts. If you just want a cheap pair of bibs to try them, they're decent for that.

I haven't tried their shorts but I have bought chamois from them and they've been great to use so I approve.

I have two styles. The thin pad ones (pro?) I like, but now on a CF saddle, a bit more padding is nice.
They compare well to others in the price range, but are not equal to the top price/brands.
I also have some thermal tights- pretty good, but cut for running so a bit low in the back.

How about Castelli? Is that a decent brand for shorts?

There are plenty of fine bibs/shorts in the $100-$150 range. Can't comment on the AeroTech Designs products.

I've used Hincapie, Castelli, Pearl Izumi, and Capo with good success. Right now I really like the Louis Garneau offerings.

Don't need nor want a chamois so they're sort of the go-to place for 'benters. I have had no quality/comfort issues with mine.

Their Pro line with the lightweight pad are my primary shorts. I hate the loaded diaper feel of most synthetic chamois. Their lightweight pad has minimal (like no) padding and doesn't bunch or move on its own or hang down around my knees when I'm standing. I typically ride 3-4k/year. At $39.99 they are the right price. I have 6 pair in weekly rotation - at the prices some of you pay that's close to $1k just in shorts - way too rich for my blood. And I'm going on 3 years with this current set. As usual, YMMV and probably does.

The originals were darker blue. I have a photo of Claudio Chiapucci wearing them. I took it at the '95 Giro as the peleton was entering Sampeyre to start of climb up the Col D'Angel. A few days before, a couple of us were riding to a stage finish at the Bianchi factory when Marco Pantani came spinning down the road in the opposite direction wearing a pair. Pantani, who was also on the Carrera team, had injured himself earlier in the year and was sitting out the Giro to get healthy for the TdF.

A lot of the AeroTech stuff is in the $50-$100 range, so its very affordable, which is great. I agree that there's plenty of good stuff in the $100-150 range, which was my point, is that you want to move up to $100-150 range.
