Riders who avoid pulling

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If I'm going all out and pulling, I can only hold it for 1/4 mile. I can't imagine going all out for 1 plus. Maybe at 80%.

A mile at 20 mph is 3 minutes. That's way too long.

If people are taking long pulls there is either a big discrepancy in fitness or it's a slower ride.

Everyone has different objectives on a group ride. If someone is racing the next day they are naturally going to take it easier than they might if they're looking for a harder workout. Some guys may have already ridden for 15 hrs that week and have tire legs, others may be fresh and looking for a workout. Don't get caught up worrying about what others are thinking. Do what's appropriate for you and don't be afraid to push yourself and get dropped once in a while.
This. Whenever I ride with a new group, I ask them if there are any protocols that I should follow. I let them know to just tell me if I screw up. Every group has its own little quirks, and they seem to be much more welcoming if you defer to them.

I can also say that I have a couple friends that I ride really well with. We have similar fitness levels and can read each other. They are my favorite people to paceline with and when we get going, we fly along. Other riders will frequently join in, especially on charity rides. If they ask, then hang back at the beginning to figure things out, it is all good, but it is really annoying if they just shove their way in.

All depends on ability and conditions.

True.

B group pulls at 20-22 mph can last a mile or two.

A group at 25+ they only pull for 30 seconds or less.

There is much less variation in rider fitness with the A team. B group can include just about anyone.

I had a guy this weekend that wanted to wheel suck and then come around and take off... only to be caught a mile or so later then he'd latch on and repeat the process. Of course he was a little overweight, had bad pedaling form (knees spread out wide) so no clue about maintaining cadence etc. Finally I had enough of him and there is a little hill/rise (maybe 30 feet, it's south Florida so it's a "hill") that I dropped the hammer and sprinted up (like I always do anyway) and he was gone never to be seen again.

Reach down and grab a pair.
Setting aside the throwaway comment at the end, maybe opinions on this just differ. I can hang with the fast group rides (although this depends on things like a stiff crosswind, in which case I get dropped). But the guys know that I'm at my limit holding on in these cases, and they don't care. If I end up at the front, I do a quick 10. I've been on rides where the pace picked up to a point where I just said: Hey, I'll happily contribute, but at this pace, I can't do equal work. And days where I'm feeling good, I pull my fair share. As others have said: there are different ability levels, and opinions differ on whether one would rather get dropped than just hang on.
