Any silver compact cranks?

Ok so I am not going to lay down the jing for CF cranks which would be fine in black but I don't think that black cranks would look good on my La Raza. Anyone make a silver compact crank set? Oh and please no Campy...as much as I would like to convert the bike to Campy I can't afford it right now and I am not going to tempt myself by sticking a Campy crank on my bike because I know me and if I do that I am going all the way. :D The Ritchey WCS has some silver but something all silver would be better IMO. Stronglight maybe?

Patriot 04-15-05 11:49 AM

There is one. 53-11 showed me a pic once on here when I asked the same question. I keep thinking it's a TruVativ or something like that.

Grasschopper 04-15-05 11:52 AM

Well the Stronglights are black so they aren't it. Sugino maybe? I will check Truvative out.

Patriot 04-15-05 11:59 AM

Yeah, the one I saw was alloy. And pretty sure it was Tru-Vativ. I'll do a search and see if I can pull up the old thread.

Patriot 04-15-05 12:01 PM

Ok, here's the thread. About halfway down, 53-11 found a pic of one. And according to him, it is a Stronglight. Oops, sorry, I thought it was Truvativ. Oh well.

Grasschopper 04-15-05 12:18 PM

Well Truvativ has the Touro which is their low line that has Silver arms and black rings and the Elita Compact which has Black arms and silver rings (also integrated BB).

Oh yea I found that Stronglight crank (speedlight model) but it is spendy ($212) and the only vendor I saw was form Europe xxcycle.com. Same vendor also has the Impact in Silver which is the same as Harris has but the one at Harris is all black.

It may be possible to find a crank with the right BCD (110mm), and find some after market rings and make one yourself.

Yea that is what I was thinking.

Anyone ever ordered from this xxcycle.com place?

What about those Bulletproof crank arms on Harris Cyclery's website? Or are you opposed to square taper? You can easily find silver 50T and 34T chainrings in 110BCD.

Largest size they have is 170mm which is too small.

khuon 04-15-05 02:04 PM

How about some older (non-MTB-compact) silver MTB cranks? The outer/middle mounting holes are 110BCD and you should be able to get them in longer arm lengths.

Patriot 04-15-05 02:58 PM

I know this sounds crazy, but if you are interested in the Stronglights at all, there may some retailers in Canada that sell them, or have access to them, and can order some for you. I am sure you can get some here in the US though. You just have to find someone who will order them for you. Of course Stronglights are going to be more expensive.

Cycling is truly turning to the Dark Side when you can't even find a silver crankset anymore.

I sense something.....wait.....(in a deeper voice). Something tells me you will be able to find the Stronglights from a US seller.

joejack951 04-15-05 03:05 PM

www.bullteksports.com has two different Stronglight compact cranks, both of which I believe come in silver. I ordered my Pulsion SL triple from them and their service and delivery was great. Their prices were way lower than others too. Only downside is no returns.

The Sugino XD crank has a 110 bcd that would work for a compact crank. Rivendell sells them. They also used to have a small supply of the old silver Ritchey cranks. Could be all gone now.

If you're not adverse to larger cogs in the back, and have the RD capacity for it, I've also seen a 130 bcd crand with 50/38 chainrings with a 13-30 cassette in the back for essentially the same gear range as 50/34 with 12-27.

Nashbar has a silver compact double that is ISIS drive.

You mean this one? I would try it but I haven't seen it in silver.

I must have landed on my head one too many times, the one I'm thinking of is a triple trekking crankset.

I am amazed that there is only one compact crank out there in silver? How about the Ritchey Compact.

Here is an example of why I don't like black cranksets (see below picture). I'm sure it's a fine bike, but that black crank doesn't look right.

Sisyphe_Dol 04-15-05 08:53 PM

StrongLight has 2 (or maybe more) compact cranksets, Impact Compact (silver, cheaper) , and Z'Light Compact (darker, a bit heavier).
And SpaCycles (shop in UK) has these models. (seems like this shop is the distributer of StrongLight in UK.)
http://www.spacycles.co.uk/

I found this information in Cycling Plus (UK cycling magazine).
What is cool in these cranksets is various crank arm length - 165, 170, 175mm.
All other compact cranksets that I can encounter has not 165mm, nor 167.5mm arms.

The big difference between the Impact and Z'light is that the Impact is for square taper BBs and the Z'light has an ISIS interface.

Stronglight rings are really tough and long lastings.
You could also look at at Specialities-TA.

Wow those are pretty nice looking and you pay for it. :D 53-11 should give them a look too as they come in 180 mm.

Call me crazy Grasschopper, but I think with the black velomax rims, the black bottle cages, the black bar tape, and the black saddle on your Salsa that a FSA black compact carbon crank will look awesome.
