Silly questions: WTF is up with upside down drop bars?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, but it would look so much cooler with his bars flipped up...

Well... why don't you mind your own business. You're sounding like a snotty roadie who thinks everyone else should do it the way *you* think. They like, they ride, they good.

If you have clipless pedals doing that, (which he obviously does), imagine what would happen if you tipped the bike over, when doing a wheelie. Not pretty!

Recently while working for Intel I went undercover on a number of college campuses to determine the nature and extent of this activity as the FBI and CIA both had concerns about it.The VP thought that there might be Al Caida ties...All that I could discern was that this was some kind of spring mating ritual performed mostly by long haired music students who in all likelihood voted for Ralph Nader so who were in and of thenselves no threat to the present administration..The President wanted to know if they could be recruited to help his stance on social security reform but I told him I didnt think so..Interestingly the male rider appears first sometime around mid to late March depending upon the weather and the female rider appears about two weeks later.. There is a courting period of 10 to 20 days and then the riders pair off..Of note it appears that they are offspring of similar riders of a generation of students from the 60s and 70s..So this activity could well be genetic..

The USPS tearm had special tires made by Hutchinson. They were red and blue striped, hence the appearance of purple from a distance. You can get your own set for about $60 at fine stores everywhere.

Well, maybe that's why they all seem to be wearing running shoes or sneakers.

I don't think it'd be that big a deal actually. I have clipless pedals on my MTB and sometimes if I'm not weighted front-to-back properly on a very steep offroad climb, I can overtorque and flip my bike. I have yet to be caught in my pedals when that happens. My feet magically come loose without me thinking about it.

I have to admit that it has happened to me.......more than once. I guess that makes me both uncoordinated AND a slow learner.

Someone "buys" (or otherwise acquires) a used road bike, but has no intention of riding it as it is supposed to be ridden - the work-around is to turn the bars up so they can sit upright and reach the bars.

This was real common back in the 70's when I was in junior high. All the Schwinn Varsity's had the bars turned up. Made it easier to do wheelies.
Actually, all the parents, who were kids in the 70's and turned up their Schwinn Varsity's to look cool and do wheelies with all the Stingrays, advised their now-college kids to modify their bikes this way on campus... because, they are so nerdy that they need to do something to be cool.

(actually... no one has been at all cool since the 70's)

Floyd and the guys are wearing sneakers, also those tires they are riding are not the onces they raced on that day. Either the wheels or the bikes are swapped before the parade laps. This keeps the tire sponsor happy, but those guys didn't ride onto the champs' with those clinchers..

They do train on them, at least when they are shooting the lance chronicles, but despite them being marketed as USPS race tires, they are/were not raced by the team.

I've seen this too, kind of defeats the purpose of having drop handlebars, but anything to be different I guess.

Sounds like a bunch of bull**** to me. The bars are inverted to make riding more comfortable. Not all individualls can bend over double to make their bikes preform like they wish. Ergo, inverted bars. I have one myself.

LOL. I used to have my handlebars upside down like this in my teens (early / mid 1980´s) - Quite a few of us did. Was truly very easy to get the wheel up and keep it there - LOL. As if I would do wheelies now... hehehe. :-)
