Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommend a Great Book or Two on The Classics

I am wanting to give as gifts two books on the great european classic races. One or both could be a picture book with ample writings.

Thanks!

The Spring Classics: Cycling's Greatest One-Day Races: Philippe Bouvet, Phillipe Brunel, Pierre Callewaert, Jean-Luc Gatellier: 9781934030608: Amazon.com: Books

The Spring Classics. - I have this book and think it is pretty awesome. Coffee table sized with good photos and good description of the history and challenge of the races.

The Monuments by Peter Cossins
Paris-Roubaix: The Inside Story by Les Woodland

I have Kindle versions of each but I'm sure they sell hard copy as well.

Wow - good sized, good looking book for less than $30! I wasn't in the market, but am very tempted to get it.

Not strictly focused on the Spring Classics "Cycling's Golden Age: Heros of the Post War Era" from Velo Press with a foreword by E. Merckx is very nice indeed. With excellent photos from the Horton collection it personalizes the great riders of the era and shows the conditions in which they dominated.

I can't recommend Dog in a Hat enough if you like cycling books. Not a coffee table book but a very good read.

I'd recommend Andrew Dickson's "The Rough Guide to Shakespeare".

Oh, not those classics?
