Vintage Gitane frameset

Vintage Gitane bike frame with fork and headset. Mid 1970's model made with Reynolds 531 tubing and Huret "waffle" rear dropouts. The paint and decals appear to be original, including nice pinstriping around the lugs. There are a few nicks and minor retouch, but overall in very good condition. Size 53 x 54 c-t-c

This frame may be an Olympic model from around 1974.

The fork is not original to the frame, but it is good quality and in good condition (Champion tubing)

The headset is Stronglight.

The seatpost is very functional but has significant cosmetic damage.

Although this is a French made frame, the threading in the bottom bracket and the rear derailleur hanger is English. This appears to be original and I'm happy to discuss this if you have questions.

I have a number of other vintage parts available to build up the frame if you are interested.

$300 or best offer. Cask or Paypal. Shipping might be possible.

HI, I'm interested in this beautiful frameset. in the photo of the underside of the BB, there doesn't seem to be any cable guides? How would the shifter cables be routed?

Love the style and looks of those Huret "waffle" rear dropouts!

There is a cable stop on the top of the chain stay, so you'd want to get a bolt-on cable guide that goes over the top of the bottom bracket. Given the Huret dropouts, this would work:

Thank you Aubergine ! I've always shied away from French bikes because of the hard-to-find BBs et.al. But when I saw this beauty I was intrigued. I was not aware that French bikes used Reynolds tubes.

No need to be afraid of French bikes. There are still good options for French BBs and headsets, which are the two main places where French thread standards exist. As for the tubing, most French manufacturers used Reynolds 531 for their top of the line bikes (and used Reynolds in the three main frame tubes for the step down from the top). It's Columbius tubing that is uncommon.

Hey Italsteel. Sorry for the slow reply. The frame is available and we can consider shipping. I'll send you a private message and we can go from there.

Hey Augergine. Thanks for your responses! I've worked on a few French frames recently. I avoided them for years, but a few good ones came my way (Gitane and Peugeot) and I've been enjoying the challenges. The one Swiss made frame though, a Mondia, really kicked my butt!

Taking a closer look at the bike and making sure of things I've discovered that the bottom bracket threads on the frame are in fact French. My apologies to anyone that was considering this frame. But I also confirmed that the threading on the derailleur hanger do accept a standard Campagnolo derailleur from about the same era.

I'm going to take the frame off the market until I find a suitable bottom bracket for it. Stay tuned if you are interested.

Velo Orange makes a good reasonably priced BB for French bikes. And there is always Phil.
