illwafer, PM me, I have a custom rack that came off a 62 cm Miyata/Univega tourer, and it doesn't fit my 54 cm tourer (prongs too short), but it might be an exact fit for yours.

BMX stem won't work on a MTB, they're 21.1 diameter and MTB are 22.2 or larger. Turning the stem around isn't stable for a couple of reasons. You're better off using a kid's bike with 20" wheels...

Nancy, how tall are your kids? There's some hybrids on the market built around 700c tires that are 13-15" frames, but your kids will have a tough time reaching the brake levers unless they're close...

Stronglight- On the contrary, everybody was riding a "touring bike" in the 70s! I was riding a Nishiki production touring bike in the mid-70s- the big differences was that we used centerpulls instead...

This bears no resemblance to a 1000, other than it's Miyata and it has canti brakes.
Canti brakes don't have any advantage on a bike stuck with 27 by 1 1/4 tires.

Huh? I have one probably newer (1995ish) has Suntour SL drivetrain. These came with a gruppo.
Maybe nothing is original on yours, it's a weird assortment of parts.
