He's correct. I forgot it was speed/cadence sensor. Adding the speed/cadence sensor should get you the information you need using the powertap head unit.

From looking at prices Ultegra is definitely not worth $500...

For $3,000 you can get better than Ultegra. Unless you just prefer it over other component groups. Used is your friend. You can get an excellent bike for under $3,000 used.

You have to get a custom map id for each GPS unit; to unlock the maps. I'm not sure if they'll make you pay to unlock the maps for a new device, but I do know there are ways to avoid it.
