I use 700 x 28 Armadillos on my flat bar roadie and cant fault them, semi slick fast rolling and tough. Have done close to 1000miles and no real signs of wear. I'm 6'1" and about 190lbs.

I think you've got it right. Aren't they designed to help in hill climbing, you get a better grip without putting stress on your wrists on the flat bar. Anyway, mine are set at about 30 degrees.

Peel off as much sticker as you can then try using Eucalyptus oil on a rag to remove the sticker glue, then clean that up with a bit of soapy water.

I have found that if I grip the bar my hands can get a bit sore but if I bring my thumbs over and rest rather than grip it's fine. (also tucks them in and keeps them warm at 6:30 on a cold morning!)...
