Ok, so I swapped in the Deore XT deraileur and it works perfectly. Went for a short ride and the shifting seems smoother and more solid.

The deraileur will mount to the bike without an adapter, there is a deraileur hanger. I'll go ahead with the swap the next rainy day and we'll see how it works out.
