I don't know how it escaped my memory but I had an incident where I needed an American Lock cut and the NYFD couldn't break my American padlock with bolt cutters no matter how hard they tried....

Never use steel cables in NYC. Those are ridiculously easy to cut.

I use a kryptonite chain with american padlock for the front wheel and frame and a kryptonite u-lock for the rear wheel.

I never understood how people could lock their bikes up like that. Those wires are so easy to cut that having the u-lock there just makes it a little bit harder to carry the bike away.

I think they mean for emergency reasons. I rarely use my front brake unless someone decides to cut me off in the street or if an unexpected pedestrian decides to cross the middle of the street.
