27.5 (also called 650b) is sort of an oddball size and may be hard to get tires and tubes for. 26" (common mountain bike) or 29" (which is just a marketing term for fat 700c tires) will be a lot...

Another vote for the Cascadias. I ran Planet Bike Sodapops for a few years and when I switched it was a night and day difference. Much better spray protection and they stay where they're supposed to....

What you mainly want to avoid is rear suspension. Front suspension is a bit of dead weight and maybe a bit of wasted effort, but rear suspension is downright awful.

It adds a ton of weight
It...

My Nexus 7 makes ticking noises like a clock while pedaling, but only in certain gears. If I'm riding next to a hard surface that the sound will bounce off (parked cars, bridge structures) it's very...

A bike co-op is a nonprofit shop devoted to promoting cycling. Almost always has some decent used bikes for sale. Usually ridiculously TS/TG friendly too, for what it's worth.

Is tucking and test-fitting an option? There are way too many variables here. Also, if your area is big enough to support a bike co-op, that could be your answer.

This was my experience exactly. Bought an alu-framed mountain bike for $45 as a beater, two sets of pads, one cheap chain, one sunrace cassette, one Tourney derailleur, one seat and post, etc etc....

That was totally right... but I'm quickly learning that not all dreams deserve to come true. The surfaces are rusted and the fork threads are deformed from rust. The entire headset is CCM-specific...

So I'm trying to open up the headset on my (badly rusted) 1949 CCM Ladies' Roadster, and there are no wrench flats on the crown race. I've seen a few teardown reports on this type of bike,...
