The downside is having your hands that far away from the brakes.

Solution: don't use them in traffic or crowded conditions on the MUP.

I primarily use a Surly Pacer with Tubus Fly rack, small rear panniers, and a frame bag.

Just keep the load light.

Most rack trunks are foam lined. I'll dump some ice or frozen water bottles in there for day trips. I generally do not use a rack trunk on anything longer than a day trip though.
