I also use a rare earth magnet in the recess of the peddle axle. Works great. No tape or zip ties required. Have also used a rare earth magnet taped to a spoke for a wheel sensor.

As for the automatic transmission issue--if you don't have one and you encounter frequent stop-&-go traffic you end up with a huge left calf from the constant clutch action. It can really hurt...
