Most people have Wifi if they have a computer they can download maps to. If that's the case, then using a SD card reader isn't necessary. (Using wifi rather than the cell-network makes sense. LTE...

A non-issue: get an app that uses off-line maps. There are many of them. If you are using a phone for navigation, I'd strongly suggest doing this even if your preferred navigation program uses...
