As there's (supposed to be) a little extra room in the circle of balls, and the loading of the balls is at right angles to a circular line connecting the potential contact points, I like to imagine...

I'll agree that caged bearings are easier to work with; that's one reason they are used in bicycle manufacture, where "time is money".

What is the source of your first statement? According to SMB...
