^^ Unnecessary. MTB hubs don't generally have that weenie of flanges; and if you go doing that on a normal-thickness flange, it's going to stress the j-bends more IMO.

Go double-butted DT Swiss Competition spokes. They are plenty tough for any MTB application. I rebuilt my 32h Syncros downhill wheels at the beginning of last season with them and have had no issues...
