Deore DX seems bomb proof. I have Deore DX front and rear derailleurs, and shifters from 1993 and they still work great. Plus, they are nice looking.

I have an 87 HardRock with u-brakes. This is the only bike I have had with them and I find them to be no problem to work on. Perhaps a tad bit more inconvenient but I can flip the bike upside down...
