By age rather than year I think would be best. Let's remember, a new to us Bike when we were young is most likely a classic to todays kids. Sort of a sliding scale. ;)

Nice looking Bike. The rear sprocket looks to be 7 speed? I loved my old 7 speed Gripshift set up that I unfortunately no longer have. I don't think you can go too far wrong with the XT/LX components...
