I do. I usually leave it a bit longer on the top than the sides for style points. And I use clippers for the neckline. What I do is hold my hand over the top and go at it. I don't use mirrors either...

About the only thing t worry about and it is purely cosmetic is if you soak a chain in citrus cleaners or other high acid degreasers you'll discolor your chain. Doesn't hurt it just "tie dyes" it.
