I think this assumed trade-off between tyre width and speed is rapidly becoming out of date. 23s are already history. Pro level race bikes are now being optimised around 25+ width tyres.

Pro cyclists actually come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. There are sprinters, climbers, pursuiters, all-rounders etc. They certainly don't all look like Chris Froome!

I'm no racer, but pretty much all my amateur events are in the 150-200 km endurance range. It is exactly this kind of event that suits wider, more comfortable tyres. I'm not sure what you mean...
