There's a reason why there's road bikes and mountain bikes. There's no way that a mountain bike will be faster than a road bike. Even if you swap out the tires.

Yeah, it will depend on what the OP is looking for. I'm more of a speed demon, so that's why I pick the Allegro Elite. If you want comfort, then maybe the Coda Elite would be better.

The Allegro is more of a road bike. Which will be more speedy. I prefer the Allegro over the Coda. I like the Allegro 12-30t 10 speed 50/34 over the 11-32 9 speed 48/36/36t Coda.

You'll get more gears options on 10 speed vs a 9 or 8 speed etc. That way when you won't be shifting the front derailleur as much. Plus as the higher the speed, mostly the better the derailleurs are.

A 12-26 is much prefer over a 11-31, because for a 11-31,11-32,11-34 the gears are too far apart. You may feel as you are missing gears in between gears....

Get a trek 7.2 FX or a Trek 7.3 FX for your kind of riding. Skip the suspensions and fat tires. You'll find yourself slow and it will make it harder for you to pedal on pavement.
