I tend to like a half step + easier to shift...

I tend to like a half step + easier to shift across the rear and get a bit of trim with the front.
I use 39x42 with a 12-36 9 speed in the rear. Gives 18 nice evenly spaced gears 29.5 to 95.2 GI....
