I was just lamenting at my 710 that I just got has a cracked brazing on the seat stay. Been looking for a 1979 as my "Birthday Trek" I recognized this from other posts and just had to jump on it ASAP!

Yeah, saw that post. Thinking about doing the same, but also noticed a tiny crank in paint on the stay itself...will have to remove the paint a bit to see if the stay is cracked too. :-(

Just finished a full tear down to bare frame. It's a little dirty and greasy, but not too bad. So good news first:

Not too much rust (considering it came from Oregon)
Nothing was stuck and all...

Ahh, sorry, misread. Thanks! So it's a pre-'81 Waterloo frame with a '3' in the year digit. The mystery thickens :-) Hoping to hear back from Vintage Trek Website if there are any other examples.

New update...got the headset in, honed the seat tube and threw on some Tiagra 4700 parts I had from another bike...still the the 105 set, but the Tiagra was easier to get to. Anyway, got it built up....

Ah, thanks for reminding me, yes the drop outs are still 126mm. Planning on cold setting them once I get the fit setup. I got the frame alignment tool for Christmas so can't wait to use it! :-)

Thanks, I tried cleaning out the seat tube with steel wool attached to a wire with a drill...got it pretty clean. Tried a Bontrager SSR, one from a Trek 930 and a Ritchey Classic and none could go...
