Don't use motor oil on your chain.... that's a good way to take the life of it down. It's too heavy and won't get down into the rollers, leaving your chain essentially ungreased.

This definitely sounds like a poor limit adjustment or cross chaining... OR a mixture of both ;)

I've read about the ZeroLoss from them in the Red shifters and the fact that the is NO float sounds amazing. I've fixed bikes with Rival and I really like the Double Tap system.
