I put the microshift 9-speed on my wife's mountain bike to replace her older Deore-XT setup. It works great and is an improvement. For 3X9, which she had, it works better without the clutch.

If you have aluminum rims, I wouldn't worry about rim brakes unless you deal with very steep hills...
