Best way is to experiment. Try to drop slowly, and when you get to a point where you're overly tired, not recovering well, loosing power, things like that you've probably gone a bit far.

Kick a lot. Back, front, side, flutter, fly, breaststroke, and do it hard. When you're actually swimming make sure to work on your technique so you don't hurt yourself doing that too :D
