I took the advice and replaced the freewheel with a new one. The lbs had a nos Shimano HG with the original range and it was only 18 bucks so that was cheap...

I regularly clean up stained/pitted aluminum parts by sanding with 120 grit then going to red Scotchbrite and finally polishing with Mother's works perfect and the parts look great afterwards!

The chain is not jumping to another cog... it seems to be jumping on the cog that I shift to when shifting to a taller(lower) gear. It does not happen when shifting uo to a higher gear.
