I'd use magnet closures, like these may be. Typical buckles take way too long to open and close.

I decided to try the Sugru. If it proves strong enough, despite a fairly thin layer, I will be duly impressed.

The Dura Ace 7700 is the dirty one, the clean one is a 105 5500.
Although I haven't compared them on a bike, they sure look pretty dang similar!
