I would start going longer on the bike rides, if you haven't been fit on your bike i would recommend you do that...

I always wear my tri shorts for long and short rides alike. Less padding works better for me, it's definitely less cumbersome. FWIW I ride a Specialized Tri Tip saddle.

Certainly not highway speeds on crappy roads.
