Tire chain question

I bought some chain and some cable to make a set of tire chains, but I have a problem. I dont know how to connect the two pieces of cable.

What I mean is in this picture, it shows a barrel type...

Id really like disk brakes, even those $30 promax disks, but my damn fork isnt set up for disks. So i guess ill have to suffer :(

9spd shifters

If i were tog et new shifters, would it be ok to get 9 speed. Right nwo i am runnign a 7 speed cassette with 8 spd shifters, buti dont know if 9sp would be too much.

Will I be ok?

I do, also you can go really far (like 10 psi) and i have no problems, but that when you take it real easy. It helps on ice also, not a lot, but enough to get you where your going. On snow its great.
