Stem shifters may be more "convenient" psychologically, but certainly not more "ergonomic". If they were, racers would use them more.

I've done the same with a piece of sandpaper flat on the workbench and simply working the pad back and forth a few times. Belt sander will do it for sure but can also ruin them if not careful
