Perhaps it depends on where you go in Japan. I found touring around Kyushu staying in cheaper hotels and Airbnbs pretty affordable. Much cheaper than my England bike tour. Definitely a no-camping...

I have 1 brand new DT wheelset and a 2nd DT wheelset thats maybe 4 or 5 years old. Thru axles. Dont need to adjust anything. Using mech disc brakes.

Love them. But its a totally different position than drop bars. You can compensate somewhat with stem length. Plus, some older MTBs have such long top tubes that drop bars would feel too...
