I ride a 29er Surly Karate Monkey with Nokian Gazza Extreme 294 snow tires. Works fine with snow on paved surfaces. I don't ride off-road.

I only use SPD-SLs. The trike is a bit slower, and the stiff road shoe helps. Plus, it is reassuring to be securely clipped in.
