I actually did end up screwing some tiny shopping-cart-style wheels to the bottom of my BikND bag, worked like a charm!! Total game-changer for the bag, not having to drag it around.

This case has a hard/plastic bottom, so it's not quite that simple.. but yeah maybe that would work. I was thinking a detachable solution would be ideal; I'd just be afraid the wheels would break off...

Yeah it still says "BIK" in big white letters, and yeah it's heavy as ****.

Super hard for this weak cyclist to haul it around an airport and get in to a rental car, I couldn't imagine lugging it...

I like the "BikND" Jetpack I ended up getting, since it's a soft-shell but with a frame, and inflated donuts on both sides to protect the wheels. Not sure about #1, but I'm pretty confident with it...

TSA opened up my bag on both flights, but didn't seem to remove the bike itself; with the BikND case the bike is "locked" in to the bag's frame by the skewers, which seemed to be enough to hold TSA...

Yeah I had these big plans to scam them, but it didn't happen.. the "ninja" cases require you to take off the cranks, fork, more than I wanted to deal with.

But when you pay the "bike fee" aren't you getting a little bit (~$1k) of insurance on the item, which is not covered for regular baggage?

Quick update on the Biknd "jetpack": bike/wheels made it to NC & back just fine.

Bag took a bit of a beating on the way back, had some scratches on the external fabric but no tears and everything...

Thanks all for the tips! So many options - this at least helps narrow it down.

Weight does matter somewhat, since I'm weak and don't want to lug 50# of anything around.
