It took me a couple of trips to get the hang of it. I was making it harder than it needed to be. It definitely takes some getting used to. I only go if I absolutely cannot ride the bike.

It's just a habit. I always shift to the highest gears when I'm finished riding. You're right though, it'd have to be a serious grade for that gear to be useful.
