Other than acting as a brace for the long seat tube the top cables do not take much of a load. The lower ones do. All cables are tension cables :0. Maybe the upper ones help folding and unfolding.

If you can get by with the two speed, it is nice way to go. The Sturmey Archer hub adds weight and complication. I still would recommend it if you need it. It makes changing a flat more complicated....
