I stretch to avoid lower back spasms. If I don't stretch before riding, my lower back starts tightening/cramping up after about 15 miles. It works for me.

My left shifter (105 double) broke in late-ish 2009 and Shimano replaced it no questions asked. Haven't had any problems in the 10-12 months & ~1,200 miles since then.
