Braking forces are much greater because the acceleration is much stronger. Your braking from speed in just a couple of seconds. That is a lot force. F=MA where A is the change of speed with time.

Dahon d7 is an excellent choice. For hills, I would much prefer a derailleur to hub gears for their efficiency and less drag.

The sports stem would impair the usefulness of the block but a small bag or perhaps the dual pannier rack or some such. Ideally a lug for the block would be brazed or welded during manufacturing.
